This rock is the best to work with. It has a great strength and is easily bonded to mortar. You generally only use mortar on the back side of the walls to minimize sinking and it gives some structural support. Mortar is also put on the back, so you can't see so much of it!
This rock (Camus Gray) is the most commonly used rock in the Portland area. We use it to make formal walls. Which means a wall has a flat front and is flat on top!
Contacting the Contractor, to set up a measure, is the best way to get an idea on how much drainage is needed and about how much money it will cost to build a formal gray basalt retaining wall.
